In diesem Überblickswerk in englischer Sprache wird das touristische Potential von Küstengebieten auf der ganzen Welt systematisch untersucht. Im Mittelpunkt stehen die natürlichen Gegebenheiten und ihre Nutzung in den wichtigsten Tourismusregionen, dabei werden besonders die geomorphologischen, klimatischen, hydrologischen und biologischen Faktoren berücksichtigt. Risikofaktoren, wie unbedachte menschliche Eingriffe in die aus hydrologischer Sicht wertvolle Naturumgebung, die zu einer Reduzierung des touristischen Potentials führen, werden ebenfalls analysiert. Der Band, in dem die wichtigste technisch-geographische Literatur zum Thema aufgearbeitet wurde, enthält eine Vielzahl von Abbildungen und Diagrammen zu allen Kontinenten, die das Verständnis der geographischen Gegebenheiten erleichtern helfen. Ein besonderes Augenmerk hat der Autor auf die rumänische Schwarzmeerküste und das Donaudelta gerichtet. Diese aus touristischer Sicht überaus bedeutenden Entwicklungsregionen werden mit homologen Gebieten verglichen, die über ähnliche hydrographische und maritime Parameter verfügen und zu den wichtigsten Tourismusgebieten der Welt zählen. Vor diesem Hintergrund werden Möglichkeiten zur ganzjährigen Nutzung des touristischen Potentials der Region vor dem Hintergrund globaler Entwicklungen ausgelotet.
Autorenporträt:
Prof. Dr. Gheorghe Romanescu (geb. 1959) lehrt Geographie an der Universität „Alexandru Ioan Cuza“ in Iasi (Rumänien). Seine Spezialgebiete sind Hydrographie, Ozeanographie und Geomorphologie. In den letzten Jahren hat er in enger Zusammenarbeit mit Archäologen neue Ansätze zur historischen Landschaftsforschung entwickelt und die Verbindungen zwischen Geographie, Archäologie und Touristik in seinen Publikationen verfolgt.

The Tourist Potential of Coasts and Deltas. A Look at Romanian Coastal Areas presents the tourist potential of the accumulation and erosion of coastal areas in the entire world. This perspective stresses the natural potential of coastal areas and the way the most important tourist regions are exploited. Geomorphological, climatic, hydrological, and biological factors are highlighted. The natural setting is put in focus. There is an explanation of the phenomena that determine the high tourist potential of certain areas. Positive and negative aspects of the most important tourist regions are discussed. Most hydrotechnical works have given especial value to the areas with high tourist potential. However, certain anthropical works have stressed the reduction of tourist potential.
The paper contains numerous illustrations. A series of drawings and original photos by the author accompany the text. There are images of all the continents. Information taken from the technical literature has been processed and analyzed. Sustainable development at the level of global tourism provides the context. The Romanian Black Sea coast and the Danube Delta are given special mention. The two tourist areas of the Black Sea are compared to other similar regions within the same hydrographical basin or within other maritime settings. This paper was written to take account of the particular interest of current trends in tourism, notably the year-round maritime aspect. This treatment is the reason for the registration of the highest number of tourists on the coast, especially in the summer.
