Das vorliegende Buch versammelt Beiträge, welche anhand der Provinz Moesia Inferior die Kolonisierung und damit in Verbindung die Romanisierung einer griechischsprachigen Gegend modellhaft beschreiben: Die Provinz war in römischer Zeit von Zweisprachigkeit gekennzeichnet und durch die starke Militärpräsenz der Römer geprägt. Das Phänomen der Kolonisierung wird in engem Zusammenhang mit einer ihrer Hauptfolgen, der Romanisierung, analysiert. Dieser Zugang kann als Versuch gesehen werden, ein Modell zu entwickeln, das auch auf die Entwicklung in anderen Provinzen übertragen werden kann. Aus diesem Grund enthält der Band nicht nur Studien zu Moesia Inferior, sondern nimmt in jeweils einem Aufsatz auch andere Regionen, nämlich Sardinien und Germania Superior ins Blickfeld.

Prof. Dr. Lucrețiu Mihailescu-Bîrliba ist Professor für Römische Geschichte und Archäologie an der Universität Iasi (Rumänien). Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte sind im Bereich der antiken Demographie und Prosopographie. Er ist Autor von Büchern wie: Individu et société en Dacie romaine. Etude de démographie historique (2004) or Les affranchis dans les provinces romaines de l’Illyricum (2006).

The main aim of this book consists in setting the colonization in Moesia inferior as a possible model of colonization in the Roman world with Greek-speakers: the province was characterized through bilingualism and, on the other hand, through a strong military presence. The phenomenon of colonization is treated in strong connection with one of its effects, Romanization. This kind of approach may constitute a pattern for the colonization in similar provinces. That is why the volume includes not only studies on Moesia inferior, but also two papers on different regions, like Sardinia and Germania superior.

Prof. Dr. Lucrețiu Mihailescu-Bîrliba is professor for Roman History and Archaeology at “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University in Iași (Romania). He deals recently with ancient demography and Latin prospography. Lucrețiu Mihailescu-Bîrliba is author of books like: Individu et société en Dacie romaine. Etude de démographie historique (2004) or Les affranchis dans les provinces romaines de l’Illyricum (2006).
